What is a Chinese M Visa?

It is different from a tourist (L) visa. If you are going to Guangzhou to buy goods, visit factories, or attend the Canton Fair, the M visa is what you need.
How Long Does It Take?
Allow 7 to 15 working days from the day you submit your application. If you are applying close to a Canton Fair date, apply at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Processing can be slower in peak periods.
How Much Does It Cost?
Visa fees vary by nationality and application type. For Ugandan applicants, expect to pay between $50 and $100 at the Chinese Embassy in Kampala. Fees are paid at the embassy and are non-refundable.
Documents You Will Need

Personal documents:
- Valid Ugandan passport (minimum 6 months validity, at least 2 blank pages)
- Completed visa application form (download from the Chinese Embassy website)
- Recent passport-sized photo (white background, taken within the last 3 months)

Business documents:
- Invitation letter from your Chinese business partner or host company (this is critical)
- Your business registration certificate or trading licence

- Hotel reservation for your stay in China

- Bank statement for the last 3 to 6 months showing sufficient funds

The Invitation Letter — The Most Important Document
The invitation letter from your Chinese host is the document most applications are rejected without. It must be on company letterhead and include:
- Your full name as it appears in your passport
- Purpose of the visit
- Duration and dates of the stay
- Name, address, and contact details of the inviting company
- Signature and company stamp of the inviting party

2. Your cover letter must match your invitation letter The dates, host company name, and purpose of visit should be identical across all documents. Inconsistencies are the most common reason for delays.
3. Apply as early as possible M visas are typically issued for 30 to 90 days, single or multiple entry. If you are a frequent China traveler, ask for multiple entry and a longer validity — you are more likely to get it if your travel history is clean.
4. Show ties to Uganda The embassy wants to see that you have reasons to return. Employment letters, property documents, and family details all help.
5. Do not overstay or change purpose Using an M visa for activities beyond trade and business is a visa violation. Stick to the purpose you declared.
